Retro action items that actually get done
Most retros end with good intentions and a list nobody opens again. In Retrocycle, action items live with the team, not inside one meeting: they stay open until someone marks them done, and every new retro lists what's still open from earlier ones.
Run your first retro freeFrom card to action
The best actions come straight from the conversation. A team member can turn any card on the board into an action item, and it keeps a copy of the original card and who wrote it, so months later you still know why the action exists.
An owner and a link to the work
Give each action an owner, so it's clear who follows up. When you add an action, link the ticket in Jira, Linear, GitHub or wherever the work is tracked (a card's link comes along when you turn it into an action), so the action and the work stay connected.
Actions that outlive the retro
Closing a retro never closes its actions. Open actions carry over, so the next retro can start with a quick check: what's done, what's stuck, what's no longer relevant. When an action is marked done, Retrocycle records in which retro that happened.
Talk about an action where it lives
Each action has its own comments, so the discussion about it stays with it instead of getting lost in chat.
Every open action in one place
The Action items page lists your team's actions across all retros: what's open, who owns it and where it came from.
In the retro report
When you close a retro, the report includes its action items and the earlier actions the team followed up on, each marked closed, updated or no change, ready to share with people who weren't in the room. (Reports are part of Pro.)
Why this matters
A retro that doesn't change anything trains the team to stop speaking up. Following up on actions is what turns retros from a ritual into improvement:
- Fewer, better actions. Two or three actions with owners beat ten that nobody owns.
- Visible progress. Starting each retro with last time's actions shows the team that what they said led somewhere.
- No repeated complaints. When the same problem comes back, you can see what was already tried.
FAQ
How many action items should a retro produce?
Usually two or three. More than that rarely gets done in a sprint.
Do action items close when the retro closes?
No. They stay open until someone marks them done, and carry over to the next retro.
Can I link an action to a Jira or Linear ticket?
Yes. Each action can have a link to the ticket where the work is tracked.
Is action item tracking included in the free plan?
Yes. Action item tracking across retros is included in the Free plan.
